Time arithmetic seems trivial until you actually do it under pressure. Adding 7 hours and 35 minutes to 9:45 PM is harder than adding two decimals because the carry rules change at 60 minutes (not 100) and the day boundary at midnight resets the hour count. A time calculator handles all of these conversions automatically — base-60 arithmetic, day rollover, AM/PM tracking, and decimal-hour conversion — so you don't have to.

The most common time operation is the difference between two clock times: how long was your shift, how long does your flight take, how many hours of work did you log between the start and end timestamps. The calculator returns this as both a standard duration (hours, minutes, seconds) and a decimal hour value — both are useful, but for different purposes. Standard duration is what you put on a timesheet; decimal hours is what you multiply by an hourly rate to compute pay.

Cross-midnight calculations matter for night shifts, overnight flights, and any process that spans 0:00. If your shift starts at 22:30 and ends at 06:15, the duration isn't negative — it's 7 hours 45 minutes. The calculator's cross-midnight mode automatically adds 24 hours to the ending time when it's earlier than the start, producing the correct positive duration. Without this mode, naive subtraction produces nonsense for overnight work.

Adding or subtracting time from a starting clock time is the second core operation: 'I have a 90-minute meeting starting at 14:30 — when does it end?' The calculator handles this in either direction (forward or backward), correctly rolling over hour and day boundaries, and supports input in hours, minutes, seconds, or decimal form. How does cross-midnight mode work? When the ending time is numerically earlier than the starting time (e.g., start 22:30, end 06:15), the calculator adds 24 hours to the end time to produce the correct positive duration. Toggle this mode on for overnight shifts, late-night sessions, and any timer that spans midnight.

Why does the result show both standard duration and decimal hours? They serve different purposes. Standard duration (7h 45m) is human-readable and matches how timesheets are usually filled. Decimal hours (7.75) is what payroll and billing systems usually expect because they multiply directly by hourly rates. Having both visible saves manual conversion.

Can the calculator handle time-zone differences or daylight saving? This calculator operates on raw clock times in a single zone — it does not auto-adjust for time zones or DST shifts. For cross-time-zone calculations, convert all times to UTC or a common zone manually before entering them. For DST-spanning durations, manually add or subtract one hour to the result depending on whether DST starts or ends within the interval.

What's the longest duration the calculator handles? The tool handles durations of any length — including multiple days.
